Fun, Alternative Games for the Hoop

Even for kids who love basketball, straight practice can start to get boring after a while. If you’re looking for some fun games to break up the monotony while still helping them improve their skills, we’ve got a few ideas for you here!

1. H-O-R-S-E
This is such a classic game that many of you probably know about it already, but the fact that it’s a mainstay is a testament to how fun it can be!

For those of you who don’t know what it is, the rules are simple. You simply pick a spot, make the shot, and the following player must perform the same shot.

You can make it as difficult or easy as you like – many people like to say you have to hit a certain part of the backboard or not use the backboard at all! There are even some fun “extreme” trick shot videos circulating around. Up the ante by using shorter words!

2. Around the World
This game is more straightforward, but it’s a great way for your child to learn how to shoot from multiple angles! There are a couple of variations, but one of the most common is to have them shoot from predetermined spots all around the three-point line.

It requires at least two players – the first will start shooting until either they get all the way around or they miss a shot. Once the shot is missed, the second player begins their attempt. If you have younger children or beginners, it might be helpful to let them stay at the spot of their last shot instead of sending them to the beginning all over again (which is typically for more experienced players looking for a challenge.

3. Basketball Limbo
Looking to build their dribbling dexterity? This is a great game to build their ball-handling abilities!

Two people will hold a stick or pole (just like in regular Limbo), but the players will have to dribble underneath it! The same rules apply, but they have to stay in control of the ball the entire time or they’re out.

One of the great things about these games is that they allow for many variations! When your kids start getting better, throw in new complications to give them new challenges. Not only is it a ton of fun, but they will be actively building skills that will help them with their game!
