Safe Surfaces for Your Playset
Thursday, June 13, 2019
There’s a common assumption that if there is grass or dirt beneath your playset, you don’t need any extra protection. Unfortunately, grass and dirt do little to nothing to protect against the shock of an impact if your children were to fall. It may not be as rough as concrete or another hard surface, but it’s still hard enough to cause injury.
Fortunately, there are numerous playset surfaces that provide sufficient protection at varying price points to suit your needs. We’ve listed out a few below for your consideration.
1. Mulch
This is the most obvious option as it’s easy to obtain at low cost. As long as you layer it to at least 1 foot deep and ensure that it’s loose, it’s a great option for most families.
It is important to note that you must ensure that the mulch doesn’t become compacted in any areas (this would defeat the purpose) and that you replace it when it starts to break down. Mulch generally requires a full replacement every 2 to 3 years depending on your climate, but you’ll want to inspect it regularly to keep it loose as well.
2. Shredded Rubber
A great alternative to mulch, shredded rubber provides a softer surface and provides a great way to recycle old tires. It lasts longer than mulch as it doesn’t decompose, making for easier maintenance in the long run.
It’s important to note that shredded rubber is generally more expensive than mulch, but it is cheaper than solid surfaces and is generally a one-time investment since you don’t have to replace regularly.
3. Rubber Mats
While it may be the most expensive option on this list, you’ll avoid almost all the pitfalls that loose fills come with. Rubber mats are made to interlock with each other, so you won’t have to worry about them coming loose or requiring a border container to ensure everything stays in place.
It is important to note that initial installation of rubber mats can be difficult, so you may need some professional help to ensure they are installed properly.
